The ANZA Project

Nostalgia made Luxury

A design inspired by the open deserts of Southern California. Exquisite and subtle, every detail was chosen to reflect quality, craftsmanship, and renewal. The end result is a space that feels less like a travel trailer and more like a luxury home on the road. Airstream already being a top-of-the-line brand, we took it to the next level with custom solid surface countertops that waterfall perfectly into the dinette maintaining a flow throughout the whole space. White oak and unlacquered brass are featured throughout, and the bathroom maintains elegance with a solid hardwood pocket door and locally sourced terracotta tile.

  • The perfect balance of vintage and modern. Anza is a travel trailer for someone who cares about design and wants something reliable and functional. Using the best materials and building practices, we crafted the space with care and continuity in every aspect.

Upon stepping through the door you find that the interior is far more spacious than you would expect in a camper of this size. From the sustainable Marmoleum flooring to the smooth rounded walls in the perfect shade of white, Anza was designed to feel as open as the desert that inspired it.

  • Anza features a kitchen any chef would love. The white oak cabinetry offers plenty of usable storage space and features luxury upgrades such as concealed soft close hard slides and a custom nesting drawer for smaller items and utensils. The gas oven/range combo runs on propane for ease of use on the road, and the large residential-style deep sink makes cleanup a non-issue. We also chose a premium delta faucet for its touch-on function which is crucial for saving water while staying off-grid. Perishables are kept fresh in the drawer-style refrigerator and the pantry above features slide-out shelves for easy organization. Elegant flow is maintained throughout the kitchen space with the terrazzo counters waterfalling seamlessly into a linen-cushioned bench seat. The dining table was custom built using the same white oak as the cabinetry throughout.

  • The sleeping area is thoughtfully integrated with the rest of the open space and features a premium RV queen mattress atop a white oak bed structure with ample built-in storage space. Surrounded by windows, the bed area is the best space in the Airstream to watch sunrise from, and the rare panoramic vista view windows along the curve of the ceiling make it possible to stargaze without leaving the bed. Along with two drawers under the bed, the back of the airstream includes three more large drawers and a closet to hang clothes and store all of your personal items.

  • In the rear of the airstream behind a solid white oak pocket door is a spacious bathroom that maintains the elegance of the rest of the living space. This space is a luxurious take on a RV wetbath with locally sourced terracotta tile and an integrated vanity. The shower was designed to be comfortable for tall individuals and features a brass rainfall head embedded into the curved ceiling. The Separett toilet is a top of the line waterless model made in Sweden and is widely regarded as the best for ease of use and eco consciousness. The bathroom features a heated towel warming rack to keep it cozy on cold days.

  • The exterior of Anza was kept like it was originally intended to be with a full mirror polish performed to the aluminum, bringing out the intrinsic beauty and nostalgia that only a vintage airstream can give. The trailer sits on top of two brand new torsion axles with integrated brakes that make towing this Airstream safe and easy. Being a 54 year old vessel, it has a handful of nicks and scratches that were acquired over its lifetime on the road, but none that affect the function of the Airstream. Integrated hatches around the coach offer access to all the systems and offer additional storage for items and tools. The 60s era Airstreams are our personal favorite because of the clean and minimal design features that were unfortunately forgone in later years.

  • Taking this airstream from its original condition to what it is now was a highly involved process, starting with gutting it and taking it down to just a shell. We built it back up again with modern materials and thoughtful engineering. The frame was inspected, repaired, and coated with a rust inhibitor before the shell was re-attached. We used all new hardware and marine grade subfloor, this ensured the structure itself will last another lifetime on the road.

We replaced everything behind the aluminum walls with top-of-the-line materials. To insulate, we used mineral wool alongside a reflective vapor barrier to maintain comfort, block sound, and resist moisture as well as pests that you might encounter in the wilderness. We replaced the wiring with heavy duty marine grade wire and the plumbing was upgraded to PEX to be so that this airstream can be used even in the winter without the worry of burst pipes. Additionally, the entire LP system was replaced with new fittings, copper pipe and regulator.

Meet the designers

Garrett Foster Green (left) is a veteran cabinet and furniture maker who has spent a 15+ year career in high-end millwork and furniture shops. He prioritizes the intersection of quality craftsmanship and design, and in constructing Anza took every effort to ensure that each element is not just beautiful, but constructed with materials and mechanics that will operate effectively and stand the test of time. An avid outdoorsman, Garrett believes that a space should reflect and promote the beauty and grandeur of the landscape around it.

Prior to moving to the California desert, Nate Kantor (right) lived full time in another vintage airstream he renovated to live and travel in off-grid. He took that experience and directly implemented it into how he went about designing Anza from the flow of the layout to the durability of the materials chosen. Nate knows that having a successful experience on the road comes down to the little things and the way the space works to help you have the best adventure possible.
